Leaders of the Islamist rebel fighters who ousted the dictator Bashar al-Assad have suspended parliament and the constitution.

They said the move was necessary in order to ensure a smooth transition of power.

However a spokesman for the rebels said the country’s religious and cultural diversity would not be threatened.

Syrians are continuing to search prisons and hospitals in search of relatives who disappeared during Assad’s rule.
